Generated citation guide
A convincing reference can still be made up.
Generated references often combine realistic authors, journals and titles into records that were never published. Separate the bibliography into individual items and verify each one against external scholarly metadata.

Do not verify by appearance
- Extract each citation as a separate item.
- Search identifiers and metadata independently.
- Open and read every source you keep.
A safer checking workflow
1. Ignore confident formatting
Complete volume numbers, page ranges and DOI-shaped strings can be generated along with the rest of the citation. Treat every field as an unverified claim.
2. Start with the DOI or exact title
Resolve the DOI and search the exact title. If they lead to different works, the citation contains a major mismatch.
3. Compare the full author list
A generated citation may borrow a real author from the topic while inventing the coauthors or changing their order.
4. Check journal and date together
Confirm that the work appeared in the stated venue and year. A real journal name alone is weak evidence.
5. Keep uncertainty visible
Not found does not always mean fabricated, especially for books, older material and non-English publications. Mark the item for manual review instead of guessing.
6. Read the source before using it
A real paper may not support the sentence for which it was suggested. Verification of identity is only the first step.
Frequently asked questions
Why do writing assistants invent references?
They generate likely text patterns and may produce plausible bibliographic details without retrieving a matching scholarly record.
Can I verify references by asking the same assistant again?
That can repeat or reinforce the same error. Use an independent publisher, DOI registry or scholarly index.
Does a real title mean the whole citation is correct?
No. Authors, year, venue, pages or DOI may still belong to a different record.
